How to Care for Your Silk Saree: A Complete Guide
A beautiful silk saree is an investment, and with the right care it can stay stunning for generations. Here's how to keep yours looking its best.
Washing
Pure silk sarees should always be dry cleaned, especially Banarasi, Kanjivaram and other heavily worked silks. For lighter silks with no zari work, a gentle hand wash in cold water with a mild silk-safe detergent is fine — never wring the fabric, just press out excess water gently.
Drying
Always dry silk sarees in the shade, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the colours and weaken the fibres. Lay flat or hang on a padded hanger rather than a thin wire one, which can leave marks.
Ironing
Iron on a low, silk-appropriate setting, ideally with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree to protect the zari and embroidery. Iron on the reverse side wherever possible.
Storing
Wrap your saree in a soft cotton or muslin cloth rather than plastic, which traps moisture and can cause discolouration over time. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent creases, and store away from direct light. Adding a few neem leaves or silica gel packets to your storage box helps keep pests and moisture away.
Stain Removal
Blot — never rub — any spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. For anything beyond a light stain, take it straight to a professional dry cleaner who has experience with silk rather than attempting to treat it at home.
General Tips
- Air your saree out for a few hours before storing it away after wearing
- Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the fabric
- Handle zari (metallic thread) work gently, as it can tarnish or fray with rough handling
With a little care, your silk sarees will stay as beautiful as the day you bought them — ready for the next wedding, celebration or special occasion.
